The Nigerian Bar Association Ikeja Branch has announced plans to host the 22nd Gani Fawehinmi Annual Lecture on Thursday, 15th January 2026, at Oranmiyan Hall of the Airport Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos, at 10:00 a.m. prompt.
Themed “Integrity Deficiency in the Justice Sector: Whither the Legal Profession?”, the lecture will interrogate prevailing ethical challenges within Nigeria’s justice system and explore pathways for reform, accountability, and professional responsibility.
Pastor (Dr.) Tunde Bakare,will deliver the keynote address, while Hon. Justice Oludotun Adefopé-Okogie will chair the event.
The panel session will feature an array of distinguished personalities, including Dr. Sam Amadi, Otunba Olumide Oniyire, SAN, and Mr. Richard Akinnola.
The event while being hosted by Adeniyi Quadri, Esq., Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association, Ikeja Branch; will have the Honourable Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Lagos State, Mr. Lawal Pedro, SAN and the President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mazi Afam Josiah Osigwe, SAN, as Special Guests of Honour.
As a mark of honour for the memory of late Chief Gani Fawehinmi, Oba (Dr) Adekunle Adeayo Adeagbo, the Oore of Otun Ekiti and Paramount Ruler of the MOBA Kingdom has graciously accepted to grace the occasion with his royal presence.
In recognition of her exceptional integrity, moral courage, and distinguished service to the cause of justice, Hon. Justice Hadiza Hamisu Ali-Jos (Rtd, of the Borno State High Court) will be honoured as the Gani Fawehinmi Integrity Prize Winner for 2026.
This award segment represents a landmark innovation in the history of the Gani Fawehinmi Annual Lecture. Conceived by the current Planning Committee, ably chaired by Dr. Adekunle Ojo, SAN, it is being introduced as a deliberate effort to promote, uphold, and institutionalise the enduring ideals of integrity, courage, and uncompromising commitment to justice that defined the life and legacy of the Late Chief Gani Fawehinmi, SAN.
Speaking on the event, the Chairman of the NBA Ikeja Branch reaffirmed the Branch’s unwavering commitment to upholding the enduring ideals of the late Chief Gani Fawehinmi, SAN—courage, integrity, and fearless advocacy for justice—while sustaining a credible platform for robust engagement on issues shaping the legal profession, as well as Nigeria’s economic and political landscape and broader justice sector.
The Gani Fawehinmi Annual Lecture has, over the years, evolved into a foremost platform for sustained public reflection on Nigeria’s justice system. It consistently convenes jurists, legal practitioners, academics, policymakers, and civil society actors to interrogate questions of ethics, accountability, and systemic reform. The stature and influence of the lecture are underscored by the participation of eminent national figures, including traditional and intellectual leaders whose contributions have enriched discourse and reinforced the lecture’s role as a crucible for principled engagement on the future of justice in Nigeria.
Anchored in the fearless, people-centred activism of Gani Fawehinmi, widely revered as a foremost champion of human rights, access to justice, and the rule of law, the lecture has, year after year, deliberately spotlights questions of civic courage, legal, economic, and political reform, as well as the safeguarding of civil liberties.
