The Nigerian Bar Association, Ikeja Branch, has called on the Lagos State Government to prioritise the completion and commissioning of the Igbosere Court Complex before the end of the current administration in May 2027.
In a press statement titled “Let Justice Have a Home: A Call for the Completion of Igbosere Court Complex and the Rehabilitation of Court Facilities in Lagos State,” the Chairman of the Branch, Adeniyi Quadri, Esq., stressed that functional and dignified court infrastructure is essential to the effective administration of justice in Lagos State. The historic Igbosere High Court Complex was destroyed during the disturbances of October 2020, after which a temporary court facility was established at Osborne. Reconstruction of the permanent complex subsequently commenced, with the groundbreaking ceremony performed in December 2022. PRESS RELEASE
While acknowledging the work already undertaken on the project, the Branch called for a clear and realistic completion timeline, stressing that the focus should now be on delivery.
“We are not asking for another groundbreaking ceremony. We are not asking for another announcement. We are asking for completion and commissioning.” PRESS RELEASE
The statement also calls for a wider review of court infrastructure across Lagos State, including the rehabilitation of dilapidated facilities, improved power and water supply, modern ICT and case-management systems, adequate security, accessibility for persons living with disabilities, and a sustainable maintenance programme. Among other recommendations, the NBA Ikeja Branch urged the Lagos State Government to publish a completion roadmap for the Igbosere project, provide periodic updates on its implementation, undertake a statewide court infrastructure audit and establish a sustainable justice-infrastructure programme. The Branch maintained that the restoration of Igbosere is significant not only as an infrastructure project but also because of the court complex’s place in the history of Lagos and the Nigerian Judiciary. PRESS RELEASE
